Activities

Whether you wish to stay on the resort grounds for a day of relaxing or would like to experience the region, there are plenty of things to do in and around the Fort Steele Resort.

On Site

You can go for a swim in our outdoor solar-heated swimming pool or you can simply lounge around

with a good book if you prefer not to get wet.

​

Kids will be happy to find a basketball hoop as well as fields big enough for some team activities, while

younger children will love spending time on our playground.

​

     No matter what your activity of choice, once the sun starts to set you can come down to the store to

get some ice cream or cozy up next to one of our fire pits.

​

If you like animals you'll definitely want to feed our famous emus as well as the horses and donkeys

on the property. Make sure to come get some emu cones at the store first (the emus find them yummy:)

Helicopter Tours

Eclipse Helicopters picks you up right here at the resort!

Go on a helicopter tour for an unforgettable experience. Go up to Fisher Peak, fly around the valley or even land on a high altitude meadow for a picnic! Many options available, groups of 5 people per tour.

Fort Steele Heritage Town

Est. 1898 - Right across the street!

​

Fort Steele Heritage Town will transport you back in time with the sights and sounds of frontier life. Enjoy old-time farming demonstrations, ice-cream making, train rides and horse-drawn wagon tours. Try gold panning, watch live theatre performances and observe the museum displays.

Gold Panning in Wildhorse River

Wildhorse River - 5 min. walk

Nip & Tuck Gold Mine - 22 min. drive

Miners of all ages go to dig for gold on the famous Wild Horse River and Boulder Creek, home of the thirty-six ounce nugget. Pan for gold, keep what you find. 

You can also visit the Nip & Tuck Gold Mine.

Fishing

Kootenay Trout Hatchery - 18 min. drive.

There are many lakes and rivers around Fort Steele for fishing enthusiasts, some as close as a 5 min. drive and others a bit farther depending on what you're looking for, however there's no denying that the Kootenay Rockies is a great place for fishing, whether it be regular or even ice fishing.

Another great place to visit is the Kootenay Trout Hatchery, which produces some 2.5 million trout fingerlings each year, stocking up to 150 lakes in the east and west Kootenay regions annually. The hatchery's extensive interpretative area includes aquariums, educational models and displays. It's a great place for kids of all ages.

Golf

Golfing

Between 15 min. and 1h. 20 min. drive

If you like golfing, you've come to the right place. There are many, many golf courses for all tastes in the area. In fact, with 7 courses between Cranbrook and Kimberley (15-30 min. drive) and 8 more between Fairmont and Radium (1h.-1h. 20 min. drive) plus 1 in Fernie (1h. drive) there is enough choice to satisfy any kind of golf player!

Cranbrook History Centre

In Cranbrook - 15 min. drive

The Cranbrook History Centre is a history museum located off highway 95 in Cranbrook, BC. Visitors will love the guided tours of the museum's historically significant passenger railcar collection. Each of the three unique tours shares a different part of Canadian rail history in the 20th century. Inside the museum's exhibits you can learn about Cranbrook's history, natural history, and local paleontology. For kids there is a scavenger hunt throughout the museum's exhibits and a room dedicated to an impressive model railway. The Centre also hosts free monthly lectures and other seasonal programs, such as summer walking tours nd their annual Rock, Fossil and Gem show.

Hiking

The varied terrain and ecological diversity of the Kootenay Rockies region provides incredible hiking opportunities for enthusiasts of all experience and ability levels. Hikers experience spectacular mountain views, wildflower alpine meadows, old-growth forests, wild rivers, and thunderous waterfalls, while traversing the unspoiled wilderness of southeastern British Columbia.

Some of the closest and most popular hikes around Fort Steele are Lakit and Fisher Peaks as well as Fisherville.

Lakes

One of the great things about the BC Rockies is access to lakes. There are too many to list, but there are plenty around Fort Steele. Within 5-15 min. you can be at a great lake destination for swimming, boating or simply relaxing. Notable favourites in the area are Norbury lake, Horseshoe lake, Wasa lake and Lazy lake. There is also Lakit lake where you can do some pretty good rock climbing. But the list doesn't stop there, no matter which one you pick you'll have a great time.

Whitewater Rafting

River rafting in the Kootenay Rockies ranges from smooth leisurely floats down meandering rivers, to the white-knuckle excitement of class IV whitewater rapids. Incredible mountains provide a scenic backdrop for half-, full-, or multi-day trips down the region's numerous rivers.
